A big, warm gingham in crisp cotton, cut into a wide leg that falls straight from an elasticated tie waist. Pull them on with a tee and boots and you look like you thought about it. No zipper, no button, nothing pinching after lunch.

Here's the real difference: most check pants at this price are printed onto polyester, and you can feel it by hour two. This is woven cotton gingham — the check is in the weave rather than sitting on the surface, so it won't crack or fade along the seams, and it actually breathes. The elasticated tie waist also carries you across a wider range of days than a fixed waistband ever will.

Toffee Brown is the neutral of the two — warm, easy with camel and cream and every wash of denim. Holly Berry is the Christmas pair, and it is better behaved than you would guess: gorgeous with a cream sweater for the church program, a white tee for the tree lighting, or black for a party. It is the sort of thing that gets photographed at every family gathering between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

Fit & sizing

Relaxed through the leg with a forgiving waist. Take your usual size — the drawstring gives you room either way. If you are petite, plan on a cuff or a shorter shoe; the inseam runs a full 28 inches.

How to Measure Yourself

Use a soft tape measure over close-fitting clothes, not over a sweater. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight.

Bust — around the fullest part of your bust, tape level all the way around.
Waist — around the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button.
Hip — around the fullest part of your hips, roughly 8 inches below your waist.

Between two sizes? Size up for woven fabrics with no stretch, and size down if you want a closer fit in a knit. The product page fit note will tell you which applies.

A Note on Fit

Cut changes everything. The same body measurement wears differently depending on how a piece is made:

Relaxed or oversized — designed to skim, not fit close. Take your usual size unless you want less volume.
Smocked or elastic — forgiving across a wide range. Usually true to size.
Woven with no stretch — the least forgiving. Size up if you're between sizes.
One size fits most — generally comfortable through a Small to Large range.
Unisex — cut straighter through the body. Many women size down one.
